Markieff Morris Says Derrick Williams 'Not As Good As Advertised'

May 27, 2011 5:19 PM

Derrick Williams has a high opinion of his talents, and Kyrie Irving even said, “his transition to the NBA game will be easy.”

But Kansas forward Markieff Morris wasn’t completely sold on Williams, who had 27 points and seven rebounds in a loss to Kansas last season. “I didn’t think he was as good as advertised,” Morris said. “He got the benefit of the calls from the ref and we had to guard him different. He definitely had a good game against us, because we couldn’t guard him how we wanted to guard him, and that’s what happened.”

So when he hears that Williams is a lock to go in the top two, Morris said, “It’s still surprises me. What he did to Duke, he wouldn’t do that to me or my brother [Marcus]. I’m dead serious. He wouldn’t. At all. He’s good. But if we was to work out, I would go at him and I would be able to stop him more than people would expect, you know what I mean.”

Irving, Williams Measure At 10 Percent Body Fat

May 20, 2011 4:51 PM

The NBA releases the weights, heights and other measures they take at this pre-draft combine in Chicago. One of the more interesting categories is always body fat, since it's a gauge of how well these guys have stayed in shape.

Here's a surprise: Duke's Kyrie Irving and Arizona's Derrick Williams -- the frontrunners to be the first two selections June 23 -- were among just seven draft prospects with body fat at or above 10 percent.

Irving was at 10.2 percent and Williams at 10.8. Duke's Kyle Singler was also up there, at 10 percent.

NBA scouts and coaches generally say players should never top 8 percent body fat, at least in-season.

Williams Does Not See Himself As Power Forward

May 20, 2011 10:33 AM

Derrick Williams declared himself an NBA small forward who can play some power forward, not the other way around as some teams project him.

The Minnesota Timberwolves Wolves currently have Michael Beasley, Wes Johnson and Anthony Randolph who all can play small forward. Williams' play has evoked some comparisons to Beasley, and he is working out five times a week in Los Angeles with Johnson, with whom he shares an agent.

"I'm not a 4 [power forward], I'm a 3 [small forward]," he said. "Whoever picks me will find that out. I'm just a lot more skilled than most people think I am.”

Derrick Williams Thinks He Can Replace LeBron In Cleveland

May 19, 2011 7:26 PM

Arizona Wildcat forward Derrick Williams isn't lacking confidence. As a matter of fact, it appears he has an overabundance of it.

In a statement after finding out Tuesday night that the Cleveland Cavaliers would have the first pick in the NBA Draft, Williams shared why he'd be the best option with the first pick.

"I think I'm the No. 1 pick because I have more star quality I would think," the small forward said. "I'm just a bigger person. Just trying to fill in for a big star like LeBron like they're missing. That missing piece. I think that's me."
